The Making of Batik on Wood

Unveiling the Ancient Art

Discover the Traditional Craft of Indonesian Wood Batik

Batik is an ancient art form that originated in Java, Indonesia. While traditionally applied to fabric, this rich technique has been beautifully adapted to wood—creating batik kayu, a unique expression of Indonesian heritage and craftsmanship.

At Raya Artisans, we proudly preserve and share this age-old process. Explore how each piece of batik on wood is handcrafted through a meticulous, nature-inspired process.

Step-by-Step:

The Batik on Wood Process

Each artwork is made by hand, combining traditional batik techniques with the texture of natural wood. Here's how it's done:

1. Wood Preparation: The Foundation of Artistry

The process begins with cleaning, sanding, and smoothing the wood, creating a flawless surface for wax and dyes to adhere to. A well-prepared base is essential for a crisp and lasting design.

2. Design Drawing: Bringing Vision to Life

A detailed design is hand-drawn directly on the wood using motifs inspired by nature, culture, or contemporary patterns. This sketch becomes the framework for the batik process.

3. Wax (Malam) Application: Creating the Resist

Using a traditional tool called tjanting, hot wax is applied to follow the drawn outlines. This wax acts as a resist, blocking areas from absorbing dye and preserving the original colour.

4. Dyeing the Wood: Infusing Color and Depth

The wood is dyed either by brushing or immersion. Only the unwaxed areas absorb the dye, creating a contrast with the protected sections.

5. Colour Layering: The Iterative Process

For multi-coloured designs, the waxing and dyeing steps are repeated. Each layer is added carefully to preserve the previous colours and add new ones. An art that requires precision and patience.

6. Sun Drying: Nature's Role in Color Development

The piece is sun-dried to help develop and fix the colours. Sunlight naturally enhances the hues, adding depth and vibrancy to the final result.

7. Wax Removal: Revealing the Masterpiece

Once dry, the wax is removed with hot water, revealing the intricate patterns formed through the resist-dyeing method.

8. Finishing and Varnishing: Protection and Polish

The final touches include polishing and applying a protective varnish. This not only highlights the beauty of the batik but also makes the wood durable and food-safe, if needed.
